Thales @ LAAD - Expanding our footprint in Brazil
Visit us at our two stand locations: E40 / Hall 4 & R80 / Hall 3

April, 2011 – Rio de Janeiro. Throughout our 40 years of presence in Brazil, Thales as consistently increased its industrial footprint and extended its full portfolio for the i ncreasing requirements for critical information systems in various Brazilian market segments.

During those 40 years, Thales has established itself in a number of important market segments. For example, with an installed base of over one hundred radars (air traffic control-, air defense- and surveillance radars), the Group has a unique expertise in the Air Traffic Control and Air Defense domains. Contracts were signed with the Brazilian navy to equip submarines, with the federal police to provide a wide range of communications equipment, and the Star One satellite with both cutting edge commercial and military satellite communications services for the Brazilian Ministry of Defence in the space domain in order to provide both civil- and military telecom services.

A success based on a strong local R&D strategy In order to address the growing market opportunities in Brazil, Thales has invested significantly in creating a local R&D and industrial capability through its majority-owned joint-venture company Omnisys.

Employing 270 people, Omnisys is the industrial and R&D wing of Thales in Brazil and is an integral part of Thales’s distinguished international network of R&D centers of excellence. Omnisys has been operating in the following key segments for a number of years, progressively adding new areas: Air Traffic Management radars, weather radars, trajectory radars, electronic warfare and missiles for the naval domain, to mention but a few. Far from addressing only the Brazilian market, Omnisys as a global center of expertise, will increasingly take advantage of its export track record to address the international market from Brazil.

Recent developments attesting of the Group’s resolve to increase its local footprint include the decision to manufacture the Ground Master 400 (GM 400) air defense radars in Brazil. To this end, Thales will further increase its industrial cooperation by transferring technology to enable Omnisys to address more complex and advanced radar technologies.

Thales @ LAAD: addressing today’s and tomorrow’s key defense and security challenges

At LAAD, Thales will be showcasing a series of key capabilities as part of its extended portfolio to address the Brazilian and other Latin American countries:

?    Border surveillance: whether it’s a blue (sea) or a green (land) border, Thales proposes fully integrated systems adapted to all kinds of environments, even the tougher ones. Thales’s real time surveillance-, command and control solutions based on resilient communication systems guarantee comprehensive and efficient border surveillance.

?    Urban Security: at a time when cities are fast growing, urban security becomes a vital stake for citizens. Thales will showcase innovative solutions recently deployed and already demonstrating results in the world’s largest cities as well as for the protection of large events.

?    Defense technologies: in the air, on sea or on land, the most advanced armies rely on Thales’s systems and solutions to conduct their missions whilst guaranteeing national sovereignty.

?    Critical Infrastructure protection: the rise of major risks such as terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, climatic events etc. require enhanced protection of critical national infrastructures, such as airports and ports, oil & gas facilities, water treatment plants, military bases, etc.

Last but not least, also note that Thales sponsors two seminars during LAAD by providing two key note speakers:

  • April 12 - Security seminar / Thales Speaker:
Marcelo Palha on “Border Surveillance: More than a Defense project - a State project"
